10 ways to show support during Pride Month

Hands holding rainbow colored flags.

As we all work toward a workplace culture of diversity and inclusivity, it’s especially important to show support for coworkers on meaningful occasions. For the LGBTQ+ community, one of those occasions is Pride Month. This month-long observance takes place every June and is celebrated by events, parades, festivals and activities worldwide.

Here are 10 ways you can show your support and respect for LGBTQ+ coworkers, family and friends not only throughout Pride Month, but all year long.

  1. Educate yourself. Learn about the history and experiences of the LGBTQ+ community through books, documentaries or even workshops to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges they face and the progress they’ve made.

  2. Use appropriate, inclusive language. Respect preferred pronouns and identities. Use gender-neutral language (e.g., “they”) when you’re not sure. Don’t make assumptions or use derogatory language.

  3. Listen and engage. Actively and empathetically listen to the experiences and stories of LGBTQ+ individuals. Try to understand their perspectives. Ask questions respectfully, recognizing that everyone’s experiences may be different.

  4. Support LGBTQ+-owned businesses and organizations. Show support for these businesses, artists and organizations by patronizing their services, attending their events or donating to their causes.

  5. Attend Pride events. Participate in Pride parades, marches and events in your community. Showing up and celebrating alongside the LGBTQ+ community shows your solidarity and support.

  6. Be an ally. Stand up against discrimination, prejudice and stereotypes. Speak out when you witness or hear about LGBTQ+ individuals being mistreated or marginalized. Use your privilege to amplify their voices and advocate for their rights.

  7. Respect personal boundaries. Understand that not everyone in the LGBTQ+ community may be comfortable sharing personal information or experiences. Respect their boundaries and don’t pry or pressure them to disclose sensitive information.

  8. Recognize intersectionality. Acknowledge that LGBTQ+ individuals may have intersecting identities and face multiple forms of discrimination and oppression. Be mindful of how race, ethnicity, religion, disability or socioeconomic status intersect with their LGBTQ+ identity and have respect for their experiences.

  9. Support LGBTQ+ rights. Advocate for equal rights and protections for LGBTQ+ individuals. Stay informed on current issues, support relevant legislation, and engage in activism when appropriate.

  10. Be an ongoing ally. Support the LGBTQ+ community beyond Pride Month and continue to be an ally throughout the year. Remember, like anyone else, their rights and well-being are important 24/7/365.

Human beings are such a beautiful and distinctive collection of talents, experiences, knowledge, quirks and beliefs. Think of how rewarding it can be to welcome different perspectives into your life. And realize that by sharing your support and respect during Pride Month and beyond, you help create not only a more inclusive and accepting culture in your business, but a more tolerant and all-encompassing community—and world—as well.

Happy Pride Month!
